Abstract. This episode will explore the recent projects and initiatives of three East Asian educational technology leaders, Insung Jung, Ok-hwa Lee, and Meifeng Liu, within their home countries of Japan, Korea, and China as well as their work around the globe. What have they each done during the past few years? What have they each discovered? And where will they go next? This session will also highlight what the governments in Japan, Korea, and China have been targeting since they start of the pandemic and the associated successes and failures. What insights do these prominent woman leaders have for the world community as well as for young female scholars in the field of educational technology and distance education? Insung Jung is professor of Education at the International Christian University. She has extensive international experience in planning, practice and research in instructional design and online education. She has co-authored and co-edited a number of major publications including Quality Assurance in Distance Education and E-learning: Challenges and Solutions from Asia (Sage Publications), Distance and Blended Learning in Asia (Routledge), Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Distance Education and E-learning (Routledge), Online Learner Competencies (Information Age Publishing), Culture and Online Learning (Stylus), Liberal Arts Education and Colleges in East Asia (Springer), and Open and Distance Education Theory Revisited (Springer). She has served as an editor or an editorial board member of numerous journals including the International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning, the International Journal of Distance Education Technologies, Distance Education, the International Journal of Educational Media & Technology, the Asian Journal of Distance Education, the Journal of Online Learning and Teaching, and the Journal of Distance Learning.

Five recent research projects of Dr. Insung Jung include: 1. Faculty as Reflective Practitioners in Emergency Online Teaching: An Autoethnography (i.e., this study aimed to chronicle and understand the emergency online teaching experience of five faculty members in a liberal arts college located in Tokyo, Japan (ICU) during COVID-19); 2. Factors Affecting University Educators’ Instructional Changes during the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Ecological Systems Approach (i.e., this study was conducted with Korean faculty members during COVID using survey methods); 3. Open Thinking as a Learning Outcome of Open Education: Scale Development and Validation (i.e., This study aimed to develop and validate a multidimensional Open Thinking Scale (OTS) in order to measure adult learners’ (including university students) open thinking as a key learning outcome of open educational practices; 4. An interpretative phenomenological analysis of emergency online learning experiences of Japanese university students during Covid-19; and 5. Teaching online during the coronavirus pandemic: Panic-gogy or Positive deviance? (i.e., this study explores how university faculty members in Korea with no prior experience in teaching online coped with the demand to go fully online with limited preparation time and at the same time to ensure the quality of their online courses, using the concept of positive deviance. A recent talk by Dr. Jung explored whether Japanese Universities are ready to embrace online learning and offered micro-, meso-, and macro-levels of analyses. Professor Ok-hwa Lee is a specialist in educational technology and has been a practitioner in pre-service teacher education for 32 years. Currently, she is in the Department of Education at Chungbuk National University in South Korea. She has been a pioneer of the e-learning and technology applications in Korea and has been an active speaker in the global society. She was a member of the Presidential Educational Reform Committee and the Presidential e-Government Committee, also consulting members for various ministries regarding technology and education. Professor Ok-hwa Lee has rich experiences of international collaborations with the Europe Erasmus mobility program and research collaboration with Australia, Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands, the Asia Cyber University, OECD, NECC (USA), Myanmar, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, and ACER (Australia). Recently, Professor Lee has played a key role on the Korean government ODA (Official Development Assistant) programs to Nigeria, Republic of the Sudan, Nicaragua, Ethiopia, and several South Asian countries (e.g., ICT capacity building for Nicaragua secondary school teachers; an international study of High Performing Systems for Tomorrow; Project evaluation for teaching capacity building for ICT education is Bangladesh, and an international study of classroom observation by ICALT for teaching skills). The focus of many of these projects has been on school effectiveness with international partners. Dr. Meifeng Liu is Professor at School of Educational Technology, Faculty of Education, Beijing Normal University. Meifeng majored in Educational Technology during her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree and International and Comparative Education for her Doctorate. She has published over 140 academic papers, 10 books and textbooks, and has worked on more than 70 international and domestic projects. In addition, Meifeng has delivered influential conference talks in a range of countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Peru, Vietnam, South Korea, Sweden, and Singapore. In 2010, Meifeng was selected into the Ministry of Education’s New Century Talent Support Program. In 2012, Meifeng was awarded the Robert deKieffer International Fellowship by AECT Educational Technology Foundation. Meifeng’s main research interests include human performance technology, instructional design, teacher professional development, theory research of educational technology, and the application of information technology in education. Meifeng also serves on the National Examination and Approval Committee of Educational Terms. She is also Adjunct Professor of Tianjin Foreign Studies University and Correspondent Editor for China of British Journal of Educational Technology (SSCI) (2007-2015).
