This episode of Silver Lining for Learning will highlight global education projects and approaches designed and sponsored by the Centre for Global Education (CGE) in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; see http://tcge.tiged.org/. During the show, we will hear from two teachers in South America (i.e., Peru and Argentina) as well as Terry Godwaldt, the director of the CGE in Edmonton, and get their views on how to effectively foster collaborative projects and experiences meant to empower youth around the world to become digitally savvy, caring, and committed global citizens. Using online technology, the goal or mission of those involved in CGE is to connect young people to each other so that they can engage in meaningful projects across Canada and the world that address vital social, cultural, and environmental issues. CGE is affiliated with Taking IT Global (https://www.tigweb.org/about/) which is one of the world’s leading networks helping young people help tackle global problems. Started in 2008, the CGE has involved more than 400 different schools from dozens of countries in hundreds of activities and synchronous videoconferencing exchanges. It is, in effect, the largest provider of real time school collaborative programs and exchanges in Canada. Attend this session to learn how to engage students in interdisciplinary, project-based activities in globally significant issues that involve both synchronous and asynchronous exchanges (e.g., discussion boards, writing blogs, global project galleries, project management, etc.). Rocío García Solca has an MBA with focus on gender equality and sustainable work-life balance. She presently is in the Global School, Buenos Aires, Argentina. She is also a food engineer with 10+ years´ experience in top multinational companies. A passionate teacher at The Global School, a bilingual institution at the forefront of the new educational paradigm in Argentina where she leads students’ acquisition of 21st century skills and content knowledge through collaborative project based learning in areas such as Physics and Physical Chemistry, as well as entrepreneurial skills through an ad hoc project development course. Additionally, she coordinates students’ participation in international environmental programs (Decarbonize and Unplastify) and the school´s internships program offering students real-life work experiences according to their future career choices. Rocío is an open-minded and open-hearted mom and teacher. She is also a lifelong learner and deeply committed SDG’s advocate, creative problem solver, patient listener, and caring counselor. Carlos Chiu was born in Huánuco, Peru, where he went to school. He studied Electronic Engineering at the National Engineering University in Lima, afterwards, Carlos received a M.Sc. degree in Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, U.S.A. He did research in semiconductors at the Technische Universität München, Germany. On return to Perú, Carlos created some enterprises and worked in electronics, construction, truck, and transportation companies. In 1992, he founded a school in Perú and is still working there. Since his return to Peru, Carlos was also a part time university professor and he completed his doctoral studies in Knowledge Management at ESADE, Barcelona Spain. Terry Godwaldt is the Founder and Executive Director of the Centre for Global Education in Edmonton, Canada. From Australia to Alberta, Zimbabwe to Zurich, Terry helps educators all over the world integrate authentic, globally-minded learning experiences that empower students to see themselves as global citizens addressing the world’s most challenging questions. For his work in reshaping the global classroom, Terry has received national and international awards including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee award, the ASCD award for Innovative Teaching, and many others. Terry has delivered keynote addresses all over the world including at ISTE, TEDx, and ASCD. He has also published and co-published over a dozen articles on such topics as Global Citizenship, Online Learning, and Environmental Education. In addition to his leadership with the Centre, Terry is also the National Director for the College Board in Canada, leading their work in Advanced Placement, the SAT Suite, and College Search.
