Episode #42. Saturday January 16, 2021, 5:30 pm EST

Episode Abstract: Ever want to spend a Saturday afternoon hearing how a science educator has spent over a decade designing and implementing educational outreach what may be the most remote location for science education? Come and listen to educator Jean Pennycook discuss the connection of her work to science, history, education, and beyond. Learn about Jean’s use of an interactive website that connects penguin research to classrooms and students across the country, providing them with a virtual field trip to the breeding colony of Adélie Penguins. Jean’s goal is to educate others about the research that she and the rest of her science team is learning about penguins. In addition, she relays information about how environmental changes are impacting the lives of those penguins and the Antarctic region. It is educational outreach like no other.  More information below the episode video:

Bio: Jean Pennycook is a science educator who studies Adélie Penguins in Antarctica. Living for two months every year camped near the Adélie Penguin colony at Cape Royds, Antarctica, Jean studies the behavior of the penguins as they come ashore, build their nests, lay eggs and raise their young. She works to educate others about what her science team is learning about the penguins, and how changes in the environment may effect the lives of the penguins. You can read some of the team’s articles on the penguins and the Antarctic ecosystem they study here (Penguinscience – understanding penguin response to climate and ecosystem change) and browse through the pictures here (Penguinscience – understanding penguin response to climate and ecosystem change). Please visit the Penguin Science website for more information on the team that Jean works with in Antarctica as led by scientist David Ainley. Jean earned her B.Sc. in wildlife biology from the University of California, Davis, and her M.Sc. from California State University, Fresno.
